Before you begin you will need to prepare about 6 sheets of 8 x 10 canvas with 1" grids. These take a little bit of time but as they will be part of your permanent color library take your time to make them as clean as possible.

Using a fine tipped magic marker grid off your canvas both vertically and horizontally into 1" grids. I find a clear ruler is best as I can line up my lines more easily.

If you are using canvas paper instead of real canvas I've attached a 1" grid file. You may want to try printing this on your computer if that's easier.
